Structural genomics (www.secsg.org), synchrotron X-ray development (www.ser-cat.org), macromolecular crystallography, direct crystallography, high-throughput protein to structure processes, RNA polymerase, ferrochelatase, augmenter of liver regeneration protein, protein hormone systems, proteins with biological relevance, proteins with unknown functions and/or no homologous structures.

To build a nationally recognized crystallography center at the University of Georgia (www.uga.edu/~biocryst). To promote structural biology and biotechnology research in Georgia. To develop methodology for high-throughput determination of protein structures, including direct crystallography and new X-ray sources for X-ray crystallography. To help implement crystallographic capabilities into biomedical research in Georgia. To enhance crystallographic education and provide young scientists the research tools they will need in their future research activities.

Structural genomics, direct determination of protein structures, soft X-ray phasing, the Southeast Regional Collaborative Access Team's (SER-CAT) beamline project at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory (www.ser-cat.org) administered by our lab at the University of Georgia, the NIH-funded Southeast Collaboratory for Structural Genomics (SECSG) headquartered at the University of Georgia (http://www.secsg.org) and administered by our lab.

The strong commitment from the University of Georgia and the Georgia Research Alliance in building world-class facilities for structural biology was the major reason that attracted me to move to Georgia. The continued support from the Georgia Research Alliance toward research activities in the state and research visions of its Eminent Scholars have made Georgia an excellent environment for growth and productivity in interdisciplinary cutting edge research and provided a confirmation that it was a right decision for me to come to Georgia twelve plus years ago.
