Dr. Amy Moore Brings Cancer to Light in GSU Honors seminar

In fall 2014, Georgia State University Honors students by the dozens took Honors 1000 seminars on a variety of topics—from drug abuse to the mid-term elections to literary societies to corporate ethics. These classes allow students to branch out and test their skills in a broad range of disciplines. One seminar that stood out this past semester was “Cancer: An Imminent Human Disaster” taught by Dr. Amy Moore.

Dr. Moore’s class sought to address a fairly lofty question. The World Health Organization has declared that cancer is an “imminent human disaster,” with cancer cases expected to increase by 57% worldwide over the next twenty years, despite the significant amount of work and research that has been poured into this issue to date. So, Dr. Moore asks, “What are the challenges and barriers (biological, financial, political, and societal) that need to be addressed as we seek to make continued progress in this fight?”
