Body Surface Translations

Industry: Stereoscopic imaging for agribusiness

Body Surface Translations is developing a convenient, hand-held imaging device to estimate the weight of a live farm animal. The device will meet an important need for the livestock industry, which must meet target specifications for the weight of livestock or face expensive penalties from meat processors.

Current livestock weighing techniques are costly and cumbersome. Instead, hog farmers typically estimate the weight of their livestock based on appearance, but this method is prone to error.

BST’s core technology uses digital imaging and weight estimation algorithms to provide a much more accurate measurement. This allows farmers to adjust their livestock’s feed rations to better meet target weights, and can help save money on feed costs.

BST estimates its technology has the potential to save the US pork industry as much as $1 billion per year.
