Industry: Glass antenna arrays
As the automotive industry progresses toward a future where cars assist drivers (or self-drive entirely), the need for improved radar hardware is growing. Current systems rely on light detection and ranging (LiDAR) devices, but such modules are bulky and expensive.
Plaid Semiconductors is creating glass antenna-in-package (AiP) arrays, which provide radars with longer range, higher resolution, lower cost and at least 10x smaller form factor than current technology. Target customers are companies developing radar software, car manufacturers and self-driving car companies.
Pioneered at Georgia Tech’s Packaging Research Center, the radar technology from Plaid Semiconductors provides a head start of two to three years over competitors. The market opportunity for radar modules in the automotive industry is valued at $5.5 billion (2022).
